This is our winter trip in its planning stage. We are going to Earthsong, if we can swing the cash! It's in Healy alaska and will go into Denali with sled dogs and camp..... I've heard this is awesome, check out their website. jo

the majority of our year we back-country/cross country ski...... they are so many trails all over the borough so you don't have to go to the same place twice, but we stay mostly close to home so we don't have to drive to a trail head. The labs love to go with us, sometimes they break trail, sometimes they follow! jo

Ellen we hike daily in our backyard, the chugach state park is next to us and so we have literally unlimited miles to hike and hike. My dogs are really fit little critters, we carry packs with water for them especially on hot days, they will drink from nalgenes!
I have a more difficult time with the middle of summer, the days are so long and you just forget to sleep. We have lights on timers in our bedroom to simulate sunrise in the winter otherwise I tend to hibernate alot. We go in the winter when the moon is out, and there are lots of lighted trails for the cross country skiers!! jo

not really teach them to pull was wondering more along the line of keeping them exercised ...ya don't have to do more than run the blueblazes out of them then?
do you make sure they stay hydrated?
i wondered how ya did with the extended or shorten days... ya just learned to see in the dark or go when the moon is full and reflects on the snow??

the hard to explain thing about winter here....... the sun reflects alot of light, and our sun up and dusk are very long, so we have a peach alpenglow that lasts a long time. Along with all of that is we do things in the "dark" we ski, run with the dogs everything "in the dark"!! There is really only 2 long dark months and then we're kind of like you. It's very bright here in the winter with all the sun and open space.
They have their little packs as well, aren't they great!
They love to pull, I don't think we really had to teach them, they do get rowdy though.........

Jo when you go mushing in the winter, do you stop because of darkness in early afternoons? Thanks for sharing the earthsonglodge the tales from the snowtrail are a hoot.
Our St.Bernard and Labs tote dogpacks and carry cookwear/their stuff. What exercises do you do to train them to pull? |

Thanks so much Jen! It's kind of evolving, I didn't want it to be a me, me, me thing. I just wanted people to enjoy looking at it, and kind of imagine a day up here with me.
We boot our labs up when it's under ten degrees up here and they're on the trail. Their pads crack and dry out when it's really cold. We ski-jour (did I spell that right?) with them in harnesses and they're getting their first two dog sled. They call pull on flat surfaces but I probably don't want to overuse them on the mountain where it's steep. I want to avoid joint/arthritis problems when they're older....
It's going to be a very light sled, we'll be able to load up a picnic into it. Just a fun thing. I'm so happy you like my site! jo
