Workshop in NY: Exploring the Small Farm Dream
Are you interested in starting a small farm business? What type of
information do you need to start? What type of farming enterprise you
would like to develop? Do you know someone who has these same questions?
If these questions sound familiar, Cornell Cooperative Extension Wayne
County, in cooperation with Wayne County Agriculture Development Board
will be presenting a 4 session workshop on February 27th, March 5th, 19th, and April 2nd to help answer these questions. This in-depth program will run each evening from 6-9pm at the CCE Wayne County office in Newark, NY.
Applications for participation are now available by calling 315-331-8415 or by accessing the CCE website at:

Applications are due by Monday, February 11.
This workshop curriculum was designed by the Northeast Small Farm
Institute and will be taught by Beth Claypoole, Executive Director and Ag Specialist with CCE Wayne County and Elizabeth Henderson, farm owner of Peacework Organic Farm and author of several books on sustainable farming.
Individuals of many different backgrounds are invited to submit an
application for participation in the workshop. While the Explorer
workshop is not designed to help participants develop a full business
plan, this workshop will help those in the initial stages of thinking
about starting an agriculture business. Beth Claypoole, is excited about continuing this program in Wayne County: “In the CCE office, I get about 1 phone call a month from people wanting to start a farm business. This workshop will allow participants to explore all the options available.
Participation in the workshop will allow aspiring farmers with an
opportunity to examine many critical issues that they must consider to
establish clear personal and business goals for the farm. As a result of last year’s program 3 new farms are starting Wayne County – participants loved the information and support provided through this program!”
This fun, interactive workshop will include discussion, case study and
research by each participant. Submission of an application is required prior to registration. There is a $75 registration fee and is required with application submission. For more information call Cornell Cooperative Extension at 314-33-8415. CCE provides equal program and employment opportunities.

Oh I forgot to mention The Keynote address was by Ray de
vries, a farmer in Skagit Valley. It was titled "How to get rich farming 3 acres in one easy step". It was quite good and funny. And of course you don't become money rich but rich in many other ways. Very good talk. MB

Up in Stanwood last Saturday at the high school was a Country Living Expo and Cattleman's Winterschool 2008. Well, I attended and took two classes. One was Noxious Weeds in the Pasture. Very good and I took lots of notes. There were all kinds of classes for the new farmer (large or small farm) to the old timers. The gamut ran from Beef, Assorted livestock, Pastures, soil and hay, Country Living, Business, and Farmstead Operations. Excellent classes. It was put on by Washington State U. extension and their Ag. department and the FFA of Stanwood High School.
I signed up for Equine Nutrition also but it conflicted with another class so I ended up taking a Birding class. All in all it was very interesting and I enjoyed it. MB

The theme for the 2008 PlacerGROWN Farm Conference is finding the next generation of local agriculture and getting them on the land. Keynote speakers are from the Growing Growers program. Michael Fields Agricultural Institute Announces 2008 Workshop Schedule
The Michael Fields Agricultural Institute in East Troy, Wisconsin, has announced its 2008 workshop schedule, featuring more than 40 individual workshops presented by farmers and other agricultural professionals. Workshop dates begin in February and extend throughout the year. Workshop offerings appeal to both beginning and experienced farmers, and take a whole-farm approach. Some workshops are designed specifically for consumers. Workshop offerings are organized into four topic areas: The Land courses address organic matter and farm fertility; The Farm trainings are tools for all farmers; Tools of the Trade workshops teach profitable practices, and business skills, and The Community workshops teach traditional farm life skills to consumers.

"Grow Your Farm" Courses
Grow Your Farm is designed for prospective farmers, beginners with some experience and seasoned farmers who want to make a "new beginning" with alternative farming methods. University of Missouri Extension specialists and experienced, innovative farmers teach the sessions. Grow Your Farm meets 11 times over a 16- to 18-week time frame. Classes include eight seminars with three farm tours. The course focuses on setting goals for your family and farm, business planning, and networking with other producers. Grow Your Farm courses are starting in late January, and are being held throughout Missouri.
