Posted - Mar 22 2007 : 12:26:17 PM Thanks to MaryJane Butters, backcountry food has come a LONG way from the old freeze-dried scrambled egg powder & Neopolitan ice cream. Your mind will reel (and your stomach will growl) when you consider what to bring in your pack this summer! On MJ's Backcountry Food website http://products.maryjanesfarm.org/pfoshop/dept.asp?dept_id=38 you can choose from instant pasta and grain meals, soups, fry breads, salsa, and unbelievable desserts like Bavarian Chocolate Mousse. And MJ's line of backpacking food is not only gourmet, it's also organic. Stock up on Do-it-Yourself Bulk quantities, or keep it simple with one-woman EcoPouch™ options. My personal favorites are the chocolate chip cookies you make in a skillet. I discovered these wonders a couple of years ago after I tried making my own pan cookies at elk camp. Needless to say, they didn't qualify as gourmet. My kids kept saying, "Mom, these are really greasy." MJ's read-to-bake mix is failsafe!

Posted - Oct 03 2009 : 09:08:40 AM ok, now I am intrigued.....I have bought the food bars, but have not yet tried the meals in a bag yet....hmmmm I think I need to go take a peek....Sounds like these would be great to keep in the trailer as well as in my emergency back pack. Years ago when DH use to go repeling/hiking in & camping...he and the gang would bring those early version dehydrated packs of food...lite weight & easy to prepare. Thanx for the update. >^..^<

Posted - Sep 06 2009 : 5:29:19 PM My son's girlfriend returned recently from a back country trip in Alaska. They used MJ's food exclusively. Only negative was that they bought in bulk and missed the ease of pouring the water into the packet and then burning it. She said it would have made the cleanup in bear country much quicker. It would be nice to be able to buy those packets somewhere and make up your own backpacking food with your dehydrated veggies. JoAnn

Posted - Sep 05 2009 : 8:07:16 PM This is a testimonial. I just got back from a backcountry fire--I'm a mobile lookout and fire monitor. I had to throw together a backpack quickly and head out. I keep some of MaryJane's backpacking food in the cupboard, so it was ready to go. I was so grateful to just boil water and pour it in a packet of food as it was getting dark the first evening. It was the rice, lentils and Indian spice meal--I just shovelled it in and it hit the spot. I was with a wilderness ranger who hadn't heard of MayJane's Farm--she said, "I like that she was a ranger. She gets it."
Yep, and it's also great to support a Northwest organic farmer.
I'm currently dehydrating vegetables from the garden to add to my backcountry meals. What I dry this year will be welcome additions to the menu next summer.
