This morning I went to the beach with my family and we saw humpback whales fluking right off shore! It was amazing; we stood there for close to an hour watching them roll around on the surface of the water like they were loving this sunny windless morning as much as we were. Even though we are surrounded by abundant marine life here (sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, dolphins -- and tide pools teeming with starfish, sea anemones, little octopi (octopuses?), scuttling crabs, and all sorts of other invertebrates) I am enthralled with the snapshot views I get of the underwater world because it is such a mystery to me.

Marine life is so amazing - so many super intelligent creatures down below. when we lived on "our" island, we were visited by a couple of gray whale mommas & babies. We'd be out in our 22' boat heading to or from the mainland, and they'd blow right beside us. Of course, we'd slow way down or stop altogether. One time while we were stopped, a baby (bigger than our boat!) swam beneath us, bubbling from one side to the other. So neat.
I love tide pools, too, Lily. They are such intimate little worlds where we can just spy & touch & wonder.

No photos, we just looked at them through binoculars. But they were close enough that you could see them with your naked eye -- my girls haven't yet mastered the skill of viewing through binocs and they were so excited, standing on top of a sand dune, jumping up and down when they saw the white spray from the blow-holes and the tail flukes flapping out of the water.

Lily-

I am so jealous! I have never seen whales before. I bet it was simply amazing! Did you get photos?
