Folks, There is an excellent article in Orion magazine about the conflict between economic growth and environmental conservation. It is an interview with Gus Speth, Dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Much of the interview deals with aspects of Speth's new book titled "The Bridge at the Edge of the World", where he attempts to reinvent modern capitalism and replace it with a postmodern capitalism that values sustainability over growth. I haven't read the book yet - anyone out there who has?
According to the article, at current rates, the world's economy will be twice as large in seventeen years than it is today (much of it due to explosive growth in China and India). Now there's a frightening statistic!
