I stopped by a friends house today and she showed me some of the paintings she did last year after taking a few classes in watercolor. Amazing. They were fantastic! So I got to thinking,

When was the last time I looked for an art class to join? It is certainly something to consider. If you don't have a college or University in your town, your local extension agency might offer classes, or the local high school might also offer adult classes. I would really love to take a new ceramics course and perhaps some drawing and painting classes. I could really use a drawing class. I find I have problems developing dimension in my pictures. I feel like they all look like a 5 year olds! Okay so when I am "in practice" of sketching they aren't quite that juvenile...maybe an 8 year olds then...

I am with you Eliza Ray! I am not much of an artist! I took an art trip back in High School and loved it! We were required to do a lot of sketching that year so I think my skills were better then. I was sketching a man waiting for a subway and people walking by complimented me. That meant a lot to me because I felt like my perspective was all off. Maybe we just need to practice more!

Just a thought....
I am an artist and have not once taken an art class. I am actually very thankful because I believe there is an inner most sense that needs to be developed and no art class can teach you that. In fact, from what I've seen and as Linda Ellen talked about, the focus gets clouded and you end up operating from a space that isn't open and you get too critical. Don't get me wrong, it's neat to learn different techniques, but don't take a class to be good, take a class to inspire yourself to slowly bring out what was already there....

LOL Elizaray, 8 yrs old, lol. You sound like me. I took a watercolor class a few years back and I couldn't even let the instructor see my painting, now thats bad. I use to paint and draw many moons ago and did better by myself. I'm not a good art student if I hide my work from the teacher.

I think we tend to want it perfect when perfect is not what art is about.

My paints and sketch book is up at the Outpost , just ready when I am to capture what I see and feel in the woods on paper. I just have not got there yet.

Sooooooo i need more inspiration girls, so get on with those art classes, and left up those paint brushes high

Jen drawing with the kids will be super great fun and learning too. What a way to express yourself through art. Plus get some darn good artwork for the fridge.

I would LOVE to take an art class. I pine for college sometimes - being on campus on breezy fall days, moseying to art history class. So simple. I hate to say I never took even ONE actual art class in college. I think I was swayed by people who said that art would never amount to a career, and so I tried to concentrate on "serious" things. Art history was just an indulgent elective I took one semester. Now, I'd certainly do things differently. Maybe once my littlest is in school, I'll be able to look into stuff like art classes, where I can be inspired by being around other artists. For now, though, I'm brainstorming a shopping list for dickblick.com - watercolors, colored pencils, and bristol board for me & my girls. Maybe even drawing tables for each of us. We'll see!
