Vintagechica posted pictures of a beautiful pair of cardinals, which we don't have here. Here's a woodpecker, which we have plenty of. I like them fine, as long as they're not pecking on my house! I love their white eyes and red splash, very dramatic birds. I had to add an effect to this photo to hide the fact that it was slightly out of focus. He's my desktop background currently.

That is so sweet! Was your 5 yr old disappointed?

Saw a pair of Pileated fly across our road yesterday. My 5-yr-old asked me if they were the "Oh-God-Birds"! The almost (if not entirely) extinct Ivory Billed woodpecker is also known as the "Lord God Bird"

Around April/ May we had a Northern flicker pair try to make a nest in OUR nest! Just on the outside of our bedroom wall, near the head of our beds they would begin building their nest at 5-6 am... which I would open my window and declare "GO AWAY FLICKERS"... which wouldn't always deter them, so I would have to go outside to scare them away. After a few weeks of this routine, their persistence would diminish and they finally gave up. Funny birds!

We get downies too, and flickers - but haven't seen pairs. The pileated are my favorites - they're just so big & striking. The sound of their pecking resonates through the woods like drumbeats.

That is SO cool, Tammy! We mostly have flickers here - of the Northern variety. They sure are pretty, but I would just love to see a *pair* of them! I can't believe they let your little ones walk up to them - they must be able to "sense" somehow that children usually mean no harm...

XOXO, Libbie

There are actually acorns hidden in holes in that fencepost, which is pretty cool. I'd love to see pictures of woodpeckers other people see where they live. Especially pileated ones; any creatures that look prehistoric amaze me.

I'd like to see one of these guys - an acorn woodpecker, right? I usually see a red-bellied on the oak branches outside my bedroom window in the mornings, and have spied a couple of pileated flying over the yard. They're so big & prehistoric looking.
Neat touch-up on the photo, Sarah! And, I've been meaning to tell you I love the FLW quote - sums up my religion perfectly.
