I was wondering if anyone knows what time of year the hummingbirds leave? We were at the park around 8:30 last night and as we were heading to entrance I ducked because I thought there was a bat flying around my head. As I got a better look it was a hummingbird. I didn't think they were still in this area now.

It's been over 10 days since I saw my last hummer, a female black-chinned... I was hoping they'd stay into October, but I guess September 27 isn't so bad... of course, there's still a chance there will be some stragglers coming through over the next month, so I'm not giving up yet...

I was thrilled to have hummingbird visitors of 4 different species this summer... black-chinned, rufous, broad-tailed, & calliope... taking down the feeders & relying solely on my flower garden didn't seem to make that much difference... sure saved me a lot of $$ on sugar!.. some of my hummer plants are still blooming -- turk's cap, flame acanthus, lantana -- so if any more of the lovely little critters come through, they'll find something to eat...

Deb, I don't think it's too late, even as far north as you are... go ahead & put out a feeder... let us know what you see!..

Beautiful!

My 10 yo dd wants to put up a feeder. I hope it's not too late in the season. I figure we could attract some that are headed south.

I've had black-chinned hummingbirds all summer, in spite of the devastating west Texas drought... I finally gave up on keeping the feeders full, the nectar evaporated so fast in the heat, all the hummers had left was thick syrup... I was cleaning & filling almost every day... when my flowers finally started blooming, I decided the hummers would just have to depend on natural nectar, & they haven't disappointed me... today, I had my first rufous hummingbirds of the year, both male & female... entertaining as always, defending "their" territory fiercely... I love watching them, so fiesty... gorgeous birds too...

I am in Northern Wyoming. I might even just do a wild bird feeder to help them get fattened up for winter.

Yesterday I saw some wild turkeys with about 10 little babies with them! YUM! I wish I could hunt them, but I think the ranch owners wouldn't like that.

You can probably still catch some migrants coming through. Depends on how far north you are. There are still hummers here--they come to my zinnias and honeysuckle.

I wish I had bought some feeders this year. I wonder if it is too late to put some out?

Hummingbirds are active and fighting again. They sure are fun to watch. It was pretty quiet when they were rearing their young but now it's back to normal. All the birds seem to be in a feeding frenzy, putting on fat for the winter I imagine. JoAnn

Update ~~ Male & female black-chinned hummingbirds have stayed around all summer, so far... I hope that means they've raised at least one brood, but I haven't noticed any that looked like youngsters...

A couple of days ago, I had a female rufous hummer at the feeder... I first noticed her behavior was different from the other females'.. then when I got a good look at her, I could see the subtle differences in her appearance... then, yesterday, I surprised a male rufous at the feeder... just got a blurred look at him as he zipped away...

Wow! It is still too cold for hummingbirds here! I feel sorry for the bees I saw buzzing around the other day. I hope they are staying in their hive today!

Yahoo, LeslieAnne! I think I was buzzed by one yesterday, but it was gone in a flash. Time to put out the juice...

Hummer Double Shot!!!.. I had 2 male black-chinned hummingbirds at my feeder yesterday & today!.. first of season, so I'm pretty thrilled... poor things are having to endure one of our west Texas sandstorms this afternoon... I hope they've found a good place to wait it out & don't decide to leave yet...

We escaped a hard freeze by a nose last night! There aren't any flowers on my berry plants yet, so I risked leaving them uncovered. Lucky the temp didn't drop like it did 2 years ago. This morning everything looks happy. Whew!
No hummers here yet, just a couple of pesky bluebirds who have laid claim to my truck - poop all over it. I even built them a quick house & mounted it on the fence next to the driveway (and moved the truck off into the yard), but the male tracked it down & continues to contend that it's his. Sigh...

This seems to be an awful spring all around the country. I'm waiting for it to end! It's tough to loose already blooming flowers. My crocus are up and they seem to be able to adapt. JoAnn

Aaarrrrggggggggg... we had some snow & freezing temps about a week ago, so I brought my feeder in... that wasn't the worst of it, all the blooms on my Salvia greggii froze, as well as all the buds on the Texas betony that were just about ready to pop open... today the wind is blowing like crazy, gusts up to 50 mph, so I guess I'm gonna have to wait to put the feeder out again... I just hope the hummers don't come by & see there's nothing to eat & move on before I get to see them...

Wow what a great link, Jen! I think I will hang bird feeders outside my kitchen window this year, like Alee- I think it would be fun for my baby to see the Hummers too!
