two porcupines, (one very young), a red fox with kits, 25 caribou, three moose (one under my living room window), a golden eagle, three ptarmigan, hmmm, I think there's something else but my mind is boggled..... just home from Denali, sat with climbers that were readying for their fly out to ruth glacier, (it was too cool). Flew glacier hunting in an Otter, the most perfect aircraft known to man. It was an awesome week. egads, I love alaska.... jo |

Wow! It sounds like you have an amazing home! I would love to see all that wildlife, but I am not sure if I would like the weather up in Alaska. I think I like being on a more normal sun schedule down here in the lower 48.

The Chugach State Park borders Anchorage,

it's the third largest state park in the united states. We live a block away and can access it via the O'Malley trailhead. We backcountry ski and hike there, it's the reason we bought our particular home.
Denali is due north of anchorage 240 miles, Talkeetna is the mountaineering headquarters and is only 100 miles away. If you ever come to Alaska - For Denali, I would probably give a good 5 days, a day coming and going and three days in the park. There are no actual trails, you have to "hoof" it, there are no cars allowed into the park. You must take school buses in that will drop you off at different points that allow you to climb in to different areas!! here's the park webpage....

The climbers allot about a month to climb, it takes at least a week to put themselves together and get on the mountain. It's a long climb....... They expect to wait a bit before they go up. We may host the UK climbers when they come off the mountain.
My husband is a climber, but we mostly ski and hike.
Everyone should see the alaska wilderness, it's really quite amazing.....

is chugach north of anchorage? do you climb?
amazing the attraction of mt.mckinley. i guess i'd get anxious too knowing ya only have x amount of days before ya had to return to japan or england and here ya sat waiting instead of climbing.
have you rafted on talkeetna? what about fished?
denali makes a nice day trip then? |

It was about 2 hours to Talkeetna where the climbers were. 70 of them were waiting on Ruth Glacier, the fog was keeping them on the mountain. We were in Talkeetna flying out in an Otter that was free because of the fog situation on Ruth Glacier. There were climbers from all around the world, a group of 13 from Japan, 6 men just graduated from medical school in Sheffield England, and americans from Vermont. They were very chatty and restless, anxious to be enroute. My group landed on another glacier and just goofed off for the day. We'll return to the denali highway for ptarmigan in august. It was a delightful trip. Denali is 238 road miles from me....... most lovely......... jo |

Jo how far do you live from Denali?
What did you chat with the climbers about? Their routes? Feelings on going out on a glacier? Have you been out on a Glacier? |
