In February, we went ice fishing for what was my first time - my boys', too. Now, I love to fish, but I'm a stream-fishin', fly fishin' kind of girl, so ice fishing was new to me. Drilling the hole in the ice was interesting, watching my one-year-old step right into the middle of it was terrifying (NOW I know why a 6" diameter hole is the legal limit here!), and it was, well, DARN cold.

ANYWAY, as I'm settling into a chair right next to the hole with my line all set up, I hear this inexplicable groaning "zing" that seems to travel about 18" away from me from one side of the reservoir to the other. Then there's one in the distance. Then another... By this point, I'm on my feet, ready to grab both little ones and try to swim using only my feet if necessary. My husband can see me beginning to make emergency exit plans in my head, and comes to my rescue by telling me that those sounds are the sounds of the ice EXPANDING, not breaking. I begin to breathe again. I look in the hole, and we're on at least 8" of solid, grey-clear ice.

It's reassuring in a very odd way to know that those sounds are "good" sounds. They definitely make my "flight" (as in "fight or flight") instinct cick into gear. They still do, and I have to stifle it every darn time I hear ice noises.

I wish I could find better words to describe them - anyone else heard ice? How would you describe the sounds?

XOXO, Libbie

Oh, Jen - I DID think of "Never Cry Wolf," and that's what really fueled my panic, I think. That, and knowing that I am responsible for the safety of little ones. And, Elizaray, let me tell ya' - I REALLY would've rather had some skates on for quick exit, too!

Those sounds are some of the creepiest natural sounds I've heard. I just wish I could think of how to describe them. If there are frozen lakes/reservoirs in your necks of the woods, head up to them and just listen. It's crazy.......

Oh my gosh Libbie! I would be headed for the hills- or at least the shore myself! But then again I am not one for sitting on ice- I would rather be skating or skiing or something! :D

WOW - never heard 'em and really wouldn't want to be OUT ON THE ICE hearing them for the first time, esp with my kids. You are a brave woman, Libbie! Ever seen "Never Cry Wolf"? Beautiful movie, but the icy lake scene - yikes!!
