Jim and I are members of the Friends of the Little Pend Oreille Wildlife Refuge. A couple of our members got to attend the national meeting of wildlife refuges. One of the topics discussed was No Children Left Inside. For the past few years our Refuge has hosted end of the year field trips for the second and fifth graders. They use to go to the bowling alley. For the second graders they go on a nature hike and the fifth graders have stations where they learn about bird adaptations, nests, raptors etc and then a hike. We do this every year that we have been here and it's very rewarding. Even though we live in an area with lots of "wilderness" some kids have never been out in the woods. It's fun to see their reactions. One kid thought the woods were too messy--too many branches, pine cones etc on the ground : ) JoAnn

Yes, JoAnn - I heard similar silliness when I went on a field trip with Rita's 1st grade class earlier in the school year! I tried to teach as much nature love as I could in that short time. Who knows, maybe some of it sticks?
Another time, one of Rita's friends said she didn't know what the sticky stuff was that was dripping out of a tree trunk. Rita told her, "It's sap--you know, tree blood." Of course, the little girl squealed!

This weekend we had another fun time at the Refuge. We had a birdbox building event. First we had everyone go on a bird hike. Jim's group saw a bear which everyone was excited to see. Our Raptor Rescue group brought a kestral and small owl ( the owl has only one eye so they named it One eyed Jack--it laid eggs so now it's name is One eyed Jill) The families then got a free lunch and got to build the birdbox. Everyone had a marvelous time. It was fun to see the kids so into it. JoAnn
