Have you ever seen or read work by Hannah Hinchman? She's a master of both words and images - you will be SO glad you checked her out if you haven't. Her latest book is "Little Things in a Big Country." WELL worth it!!!

Isn't she AWESOME? She's been my nature journal inspiration. She wrote a book, "A Live in Hand: Creating the Illustrated Journal," that I think is out of print now, but if you find a copy GET IT! It can change your life.....

I have Little Things in a Big Country. Love it. Think I'll go reread it out on the deck on this absolutely gorgeous day. JoAnn |

Isn't it inspiring, JoAnn? She is so talented in observing and documenting real life. I love that there is a sort of flawed, beautiful, talented, funny, heart-wrenchingly honest woman behind the art. She's sort of my nature journal hero...I mean, heroine...

What a neat woman. I haven't heard of her before now. I have a friend who lived in Wyoming for 6 years who would really appreciate this book.

I hope if she gets/sees it - or any of Hanna's books, actually, that she loves it. I still look through them and read...admire...get lost in her words and watercolors. She's amazing. I really want to start another nature journal that incorporates words AND pictures. I haven't done that in so long - somehow the blank page in the front of a new journal is so intimidating to me! Do any of you have a "nature journal" or the like?

Thanks Libby and Jen for the tip on Hannah Hinchman. I checked out her site and it is "illuminating". Its great timing too because I am teaching a class this weekend on Nature Journaling. Wish I was such an artist as that!

I do, too, Angie! That is so cool that you teach Nature Journaling classes - what a great thing for both you and your students! You may have heard of Clare Walker Leslie already, but she has some great stuff as well. Let us know how the class goes - and, WELCOME!!!

Nature journaling is so neat - I'd like to get my girls started on that this summer. They love keeping journals, and I think they'd enjoy sketching & recording their observations around the farm.

Thanks outdoor gals for sharing about Hannah Hinchman. It got me inspired to do my own online and hardcopy journaling even brought up my watercolors to the Outpost. I went and got the book Little Things in a Big Country a few weeks ago after reading this thread and didn't put it down. I loved it too and will probably reread when the snow gets to flyin. Right now I'm so enjoying Jens book A Mile In Her Boots, and read it while I stay in my outpost. That will be another book to reread.
My new favorite types of reading, anything in the wild

No, I wasn't familiar with this delightful woman; many thanks for your post. The site you directed us to is beautiful and am enjoying reading about her. "The tradition of William Blake..." how incredible to be compared to him; his work is amazing so as her work must be as well. I just wish I had some talent in the drawing area; only think I can draw is water from a pump!
