Since school is out soon, I have the whole summer ahead of me with my two little ones. I was wondering if any of you nature mamas have any ideas for fun / educational activities to do with kids to keep them engaged over the months to come. Of course, we will do lots of exploring and hiking, but in addition to this I am looking for some semi-structured activities or projects we can do together. I was thinking it would be fun for all of us to pull together some ideas and resources. Some of you had great ideas under the "outdoor craft ideas" strand of this topic. One idea I have is to make a plant press of our native vegetation in the dunes near our house and, once they are dry, the kids can glue the plants on paper, label the species and parts, and make a book of our local plants. Any more ideas or suggestions? I’d love to hear them! Lily

What kind of terrain are you surrounded by?

Weave grass mats.

Make a root box.

Hang a swing, let them paint their seat.

Start a fire with a magnifer. Learn all the different methods to fire build. Then comes the best part use MJ's book and make so'mores.

Trail signs/ make your own plaster foot casts.

Star gaze... paint a constellation over their bed.
Mount a spider's web.

Thanks! Those are some great ideas. Our house is surrounded by coastal dunes, an estuary habitat, and the ocean. But we are close to redwood forests and oak woodland/prairie. I'm looking forward to having a fun summer with the kiddos!

sounds like here Lily. I forgot snipe hunts!

Sand/shell crafting would be a given. Sand mosaics, sand candles, sand critters, squirt bottle for on the sand tic tac toe, shell sailboats, shell angels, shell totem poles, driftwood mobiles, ...make your own little meditation zen like garden?
Have you ever made ice cube necklaces?
Do you fish? Crab? Clam?
