Are any of you familiar with Rick Bass? I've read tidbits of his writing here & there, and I really enjoy it. He's a Montana-based "outdoor" writer who hails from Texas, I believe. I've perused his list of books & am going to get a copy of The Hermit's Story, which is a short story collection. I'll let you know what I think if I ever get a chance to read it!

Just finished the 1st story in The Hermit's Story, and it wasn't RIVETING, but it was interesting. The 2 characters get lost in the Canadian wilderness during a blizzard, and they accidentally end up finding refuge beneath the surface of a frozen lake/marsh--in a large dry space under a 4-inch layer of ice. They light cattail torches which occasionally ignite marsh gases & cause eruptions up through the ice. Eerie & dreamlike. I tried to find more info on this phenomenon online but couldn't come up with anything.....fact or pure fiction, I don't know.

| I just logged on after a long absence from this site (So great to be back -- I've been too busy lately with all my projects!) and I was excited to see Rick Bass in the Bookshelf thread -- I love Rick Bass! One of my favorite short stories in the world is "Swans", from that same book you have, Jen, The Hermit's Story. Have you read it yet? It's one of those rare stories that I go back to and re-read again and again. I definitely recommend Rick Bass to all you wild women -- his short stories and essays are great. Beautiful prose enmeshed with environmental awareness. His writing is magic to me! I've heard he's also written a novel -- has anyone read it? |

Hi Lily! Yes, "Swans" was my favorite story in the book, too. What else have you read/loved of his? My husband just finished The Diezmo, a novel by Bass set in post-Alamo Texas. He enjoyed it, but I'm more interested in the environmental slant.

| Some of his other stories I love are “Fires” and “The History of Rodney” from In the Loyal Mountains. I also just finished his newer collection of short stories called The Lives of Rocks and it was great. I think what I like so much about Rick Bass is his voice. It just reaches out and grabs you, almost like he is carrying on a personal conversation with you as his reader. In my opinion, he’s a phenomenal story teller. |
