I am so excited. Each day brings more bees and birds to the area and I can feel Spring stirring from her long winter's nap. I want to throw the baby in a back pack and just disappear into the forest for a weekend. I love reconnecting with the planet far far from the nearest cell tower or paved road.
What sports are you going to be doing this summer? I plan on being a "Tree Warrior" and going out on weekends and planting trees. Most of the west has been decimated by fires that burned so hot and so long due to forest mismanagement. When fires get that destructive it can be difficult if not impossible for a forest to re-seed itself in time to save the soil.

That's such a cool mission, Elizaray! Where will you get the trees to plant? My hub worked for a county conservation district in WA years ago, and I know they sold trees...also can get 'em at state fish & game offices sometimes...

I am going to try and scavenge from all sorts of places- Arbor Day Foundation- Nurseries, Fish and Game and am going to keep my eye out for other sources as well.

I think we've got river birches here - non right in our area, though. Saw something online about making moose calls from birch bark...do you guys hunt moose (other than the momma in your yard, of course  )?

I just love river birch - we don't have any here, but my mom has a couple in her yard, and they are so interesting and lovely!
Hey Elizaray - have you checked the Conservation option that Jen mentioned above about trees? I know down here they're around $3 a tree. Now, by "tree," I mean a stick with roots, but they grow great - they're usually natives and picked for your area. We've pretty much landscaped with Conservation trees because of their price and type, and I have nothing but good to say about 'em.
That is SO great - a "Tree Warrior!" We need more of you around! I really want to think of my summer "mission." That is such a great idea - what different things could we do that would make a difference where we live? I might become the hiking litter-girl. We have an ATV "Jamboree" here in our valley each year, and the riders leave "remnants" of their good times all over the trails. It's so yucky and disrespectful. I think I will pack a big ol' black garbage bag with me, hike more, and help take back the natural beauty of the place! Thanks so much for the inspiration!

I don't know if we can afford to buy trees to plant in the wild, but $3 a tree is a great price for the yard! I wonder if they would sell to me for that? We rent, so we would have to get our Land Lord's permission of course. I would love to plant at least two trees in the front yard. We don't plan on staying that long, but in a few years that would give great shade and privacy!
