We've mentioned her briefly already, but Anne LaBastille is an amazing woman. She's an ecological consultant, writer, photographer and lecturer, with her major "claim to fame" being her four autobiographical Woodswoman books, in which she explores her experiences building a cabin and leading a Thoreau-like existence in the Adirondacks. Woodswoman, Beyond Black Bear Lake, Woodswoman III, and Woodswoman IV appeared in 1976, 1987, 1997, and 2003 respectively. Her other publications include Assignment: Wildlife, a book of essays; Jaguar Totem: The Woodswoman Explores New Wildlands & Wildlife; Women and Wilderness, a series of profiles of wilderness women; and several non-fiction titles for children.
LaBastille moved to the woods in the 60's (when she was in her 20's). To this day, she lives with her German Shepherd dog in the Adirondacks, dividing her time between a remote cabin during the warm seasons and a farmhouse in winter.

| My mom actually lives in the town she does and see's her white truck and German shepard all the time. I have all of her books, signed by her too!! I think she is really cool and a neat lady. She really exemplifies not only simple living, true living but how a real woman is suppose to age. |

I have only read the first 2 books, but from them I can see what an amazing life she has been living - and she continues to live in her self-built cabin! Thanks for those links Jen.
I don't know if I could live as far out in the woods as she did. She has done so much ecological work as well. It was really interesting reading about her experiences with acid rain and the geese flying south - and that was back in the 80's!

I read Woodswoman years ago and was so impressed. I am sure I still have it in one of my many (8) bookcases. I need to dig it out and reread. And also check out the library for any of her books they may have.

| I have some extra copies. They were in a smoky home so they have smoker odor, but if you want them, whoever emails me first, I will get them out to ya. I am downsizing, so I need to get of about 2 bookshelves of books I don't really read or have extra of. I also have some books on the Nearings, if anyone is interested. |
