It's time to say "so long 'til next year" to the sandhill cranes here in west Texas... for those of you north of Texas, the cranes have started leaving their wintering grounds in Texas & are heading northward... I heard a flock "gargling" overhead this morning... I'm sorry to see them go, but it's my first sign that spring is coming...

I am so enchanted by sandhill cranes. I was lucky enough to study the breeding behavior of a small population in southern Washington while I was pregnant with my daughter Rita -- it was my last job in the field. I've always enjoyed the thought that my baby was brought on the wings of a crane instead of "the stork"!
I wrote about the experience in the intro to my book, A Mile in Her Boots. The excerpt is on my blog at http://bovesboots.blogspot.com/2007/03/introduction-mile-in-her-boots.html
